1047 Games, the studio behind Splitgate and its sequel Splitgate 2, has announced that it will be overhauling Splitgate 2 after its premature launch in June 2025. The studio’s co-founder boldly claimed at the Summer Game Fest 2025 that Splitgate 2 would ‘make FPS great again,’ but reality hit hard when the game didn’t live up to expectations. Acknowledging the feedback from the community, the studio admitted that they launched the game too soon.
The game will now go back into beta, with a full re-launch expected in early 2026.
Along with this announcement, 1047 Games revealed a series of layoffs affecting 45 members of the team. In an effort to reduce costs, the servers for the original Splitgate will also be shut down next month. While the game will still be playable in the meantime, with an upcoming Chapter 3 update, the studio has decided to focus on rebuilding Splitgate 2. They plan to rework key features like progression, portals, game modes, and monetization to better capture the spirit of the original game.
The studio’s statement also reflects on the lessons learned from their missteps, acknowledging mistakes such as rushing features and failing to deliver the polished experience that fans expected. They vowed to go back to the drawing board, with a focus on enhancing the overall experience of Splitgate 2 and staying true to what made the original game special. Despite the setbacks, 1047 Games remains committed to the future of the franchise and the community that supported it.
With the game’s return to beta and the planned re-launch in 2026, fans are left wondering if Splitgate 2 can reclaim its place in the competitive FPS scene. Will the changes be enough to satisfy those who were disappointed by its first release? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the studio isn’t giving up on the game just yet.
