DC Studios Skips SDCC Movie Hype-but Doubles Down on Peacemaker

With San Diego Comic-Con 2025 just around the corner, fans hoping for major movie reveals from DC Studios might want to temper their expectations.

Like Marvel, DC is reportedly pulling back from traditional promotional efforts at SDCC, choosing instead to focus its spotlight on the small screen-most notably, the return of Peacemaker.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios will not promote upcoming blockbusters at the con this year. The timing is a factor-Superman hits theaters just two weeks before the convention, and Supergirl doesn’t arrive until mid-2026. That leaves a gap too wide for an effective reveal. But rather than force something, DC is choosing strategic silence-and smart streaming moves.

Instead, the studio is going “all-in” on Peacemaker Season 2, the fan-favorite spinoff from The Suicide Squad. With a premiere date of August 21, the series is primed to dominate SDCC. A possible Hall H panel is in the works, potentially featuring the show’s creator James Gunn, along with John Cena and other key cast members.

This shift reflects a larger industry trend. Big studios are reevaluating the value of expensive trade shows. The internet has dramatically changed how fans engage with content, and promotional costs often rival production budgets. As one fan bluntly put it: “Why go to SDCC when your teaser will trend on X within five minutes of posting?”

Meanwhile, excitement for Peacemaker Season 2 is building fast. The latest trailer teased a wild mystery-there are two Peacemakers this time. James Gunn promises answers in the very first episode. Even more intriguing, the season ties directly into the upcoming Superman film and broader DCU. Key plot tech like the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC) links both stories, and Gunn has teased multiple crossover cameos from characters across the DCU.

Speculation is also swirling about whether Lanterns, the upcoming Max series starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, might make a surprise appearance. Although unconfirmed, it’s a strong possibility given its current production status and Gunn’s interconnected storytelling approach.

In the end, Comic-Con is evolving. It may no longer be the go-to place for major studio reveals, but as long as it keeps space for projects like Peacemaker-wild, weird, and full of surprises-it’s still got a role to play. Maybe not as the kingmaker it once was, but definitely as the place where fans get their first taste of what’s next.

Not surprised tbh. SDCC isn’t what it used to be… the real buzz now comes from YouTube trailers and TikToks going viral
