These codenames hint at Apple’s future aesthetic-a shift from the long-dominant flat design to something more immersive, sleek, and transparent.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Liquid Glass is the fresh user interface that will premiere with iOS 26 and ripple across iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and CarPlay. The look? Think shimmering translucency, subtle reflections, and tactile layers-Apple’s attempt to breathe life and depth into the once-flat digital space. It’s not just a facelift; it’s a cohesive vision aiming to unify the experience across all Apple platforms.

The second big name, Glasswing, refers to a future iPhone slated for 2027-the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. This model is rumored to feature curved glass on all sides, no visible bezels, and a completely seamless display. Inspired by the delicate transparency of the glasswing butterfly, this iPhone could embody Apple’s ultimate glass-centric design dream.

The connection between the names suggests more than coincidence. As with the flat design era aligning with the expansion of larger devices and wearables, the Liquid Glass aesthetic seems to be the foundation for a whole new generation of Apple products. Software and hardware are evolving together, visually and philosophically.

Alan Dye, Apple’s VP of human interface design, is expected to officially introduce Liquid Glass during WWDC’s keynote. While Apple has kept many UI specifics under wraps, the branding alone speaks volumes about where Apple sees its future-and where it wants to take its users.

With mounting pressure in the AI arena, Apple’s focus on design isn’t a distraction-it’s a statement. By redefining the look and feel of its ecosystem, Apple is anchoring users in a more elegant experience, preparing them for the innovations that lie ahead.

WWDC 2025 kicks off on June 9. Expect Liquid Glass and Glasswing to shine in more ways than one.
