Final Fantasy XVI has made its way to Xbox Series consoles, joining its PlayStation, Xbox, and PC counterparts. However, one major platform is still left out: Nintendo.
But could that soon change? In a recent ‘Letter from the Producer’ live stream for Final Fantasy XIV, producer Naoki Yoshida and creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro dropped a cheeky hint that Final Fantasy XVI could be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.
During the stream, as they discussed upcoming plans for the Final Fantasy franchise, the two joked about how Nintendo was the only platform left without FFXVI. Maehiro even humorously added that he “will do his best.” While this was clearly a lighthearted remark and not an official confirmation, it’s far from the first time the possibility of FFXVI making its way to the Nintendo console has been speculated.
Earlier this year, rumors circulated about FFXVI coming to the Switch 2. Now, with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade confirmed for the Switch 2, there’s a growing belief that the remaining entries in the series could eventually follow. If Final Fantasy VII Remake can run on the Switch 2, there’s hope that Final Fantasy XVI might also make its way to the console, albeit in a less graphically-intensive form.
While the dream of seeing Final Fantasy XVI on the Nintendo Switch 2 may have seemed far-fetched, the potential success of the Switch 2 port for other Final Fantasy titles shows what the platform is capable of. If a successful port happens, it would highlight the increased capabilities of the Switch 2 compared to its predecessor, even if the game’s visuals might not match those of higher-end consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X.
