Ezra Miller, best known for their role as The Flash, is looking to make a return to Hollywood after a tumultuous period marked by abuse and harassment allegations, as well as other controversies that have plagued their career since 2020. The actor, whose career skyrocketed with roles in films like ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ and as Credence Barebone in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise, has had their place in Hollywood questioned after a video of them allegedly choking a fan went viral. This unsettling video was followed by a series of public incidents, including two arrests in Hawaii in 2022 – one for disorderly conduct and harassment, and another for second-degree assault just weeks later. A felony burglary charge related to an incident in Vermont added to the list of legal issues. 
In response, Miller issued a public apology, citing ‘complex mental health issues’ and expressing their intention to work toward a ‘healthy, safe, and productive’ future.
Following these controversies, Miller’s public appearances became rare, with their last major one being the premiere of ‘The Flash’ in April 2023. However, in recent months, the actor has made a few notable appearances, including at the Cannes Film Festival and June’s Filming Italy Sardegna event. At the latter, Miller confirmed ‘tentative’ plans to return to the film industry. One of the most exciting aspects of this return is a new project they are working on with acclaimed filmmaker Lynne Ramsay. The two will co-write a film together, marking a significant step in Miller’s reentry into the industry.
In an interview, Miller shared their excitement about the collaboration with Ramsay, calling her ‘one of the greatest living filmmakers.’ Miller, who has spent much of the last few years in solitude, expressed how writing has been a therapeutic outlet for them. They further elaborated on their appearance at Cannes, explaining that Ramsay personally invited them and that they felt a deep sense of devotion to their loved ones, which motivated them to attend despite their initial reluctance.
‘We’ve become very consumed with how we’re perceived in the world,’ Miller said, reflecting on their experiences. ‘I believe in being a friend to people, and those who stood by me, I owe them my lifelong devotion.’ Despite the challenges, Miller expressed gratitude for the lessons they’ve learned from the difficult period in their life.
Ramsay has also confirmed that the new film will be a vampire movie with Miller in the lead role, though it’s unclear if the actor will return to on-screen work in other capacities. Meanwhile, Miller’s previous role in the animated series ‘Invincible’ was recast in 2024, but they remain an important figure in Hollywood, with director Andy Muschietti praising their work on ‘The Flash’ in 2023, calling it one of his best experiences working with an actor. Muschietti also stated that DC should not recast Miller should a sequel to ‘The Flash’ be made.
