The next iPad Pro could be on the horizon with a significant design upgrade, thanks to LG’s new Chip-On-Film (CoF) technology. Apple’s last major update for the iPad Pro came more than a year ago, with the M4 chip, and users have been eagerly awaiting the next iteration. Rumors suggest that Apple is gearing up for a new M5 chip, which might debut with the upcoming MacBook Pro models later this year. 
The question on everyone’s mind is whether the iPad Pro will get a similar upgrade with the M5 chip as well.
Apple is also reportedly working on a fresh design for the iPad Pro, with slimmer bezels in the works. If the reports are to be believed, the company is considering LG Innotek’s CoF technology for this redesign. CoF technology could bring a major shift to the iPad Pro’s overall look, reducing the bezels while preserving the same form factor. This could lead to an all-screen display, something that has been long anticipated by many iPad Pro fans.
So, what exactly is CoF technology? It works by using a flexible film to connect display driver chips to the screen using heat compression. This process allows for more compact integration of the display and its components, ultimately enabling thinner bezels. If Apple decides to adopt this technology, it would open the door for more screen space while keeping the device’s size nearly unchanged.
Additionally, CoF could offer some exciting side benefits. Early reports suggest that it might lead to better battery life and enhanced signal processing, though details remain scarce on these improvements. Battery performance, in particular, is a major factor for users, and any enhancements in this area would be a welcome change. There’s also speculation that the inclusion of LG as a supplier for display driver ICs could reduce component costs over time, helping Apple diversify its supply chain and, potentially, lower manufacturing costs in the long run.
Despite all these rumors, it’s still unclear if this new design approach will be limited to the iPad Pro or if it will spread to other iPad models in the future. Regardless, the iPad Pro is long overdue for a refresh, and these design tweaks could set it apart from the competition, like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra, which already boasts impressively slim bezels.
