The Belgian watchmaker Ressence is known for its bold, modern designs, pushing the boundaries of traditional horology. Their latest collaboration with German artist Daniel Engelberg brings two limited-edition versions of the Type 8 watch into the spotlight: the Ressence Type 8 DE1 and DE2.

While Ressence is typically associated with futuristic aesthetics, the new designs take on a more artistic, playful twist, thanks to Engelberg’s ‘Inside Out’ art series.

The two new watches, released for 2025, share the same core design as the brand’s ‘entry-level’ Type 8 model, though it’s important to note that “entry-level” in Ressence terms is relative, as even their most basic models carry five-figure price tags. The Type 8 is minimalistic, displaying just the hours and minutes, and shuns traditional hands in favor of Ressence’s patented Orbital Convex System (ROCS). This innovative technology uses inter-mounted circular discs that rotate to indicate time. The result is an illusion of a single, continuously moving dial surface.

. The two models differ only in the color of the fixed outer minute-track rings: the DE1 features pink and red hues, while the DE2 showcases shades of turquoise. These watches are powered by a modified ETA 2892 automatic movement, driving the unique ROCS 8 display module.

Despite the ETA foundation, the Ressence Type 8 offers an entirely unique user experience, albeit with a shorter 36-hour power reserve due to the additional force required to power the display module.

The cases of both watches measure 42.9mm in diameter and are crafted from polished and sandblasted grade 5 titanium, complemented by a domed sapphire crystal. Water resistance is minimal at just 1 ATM, making these watches unsuitable for underwater use. Fitted with rubber straps in their respective colorways, the Type 8 DE1 and DE2 also come with an additional blue alligator leather strap, though the exact shade remains speculative based on the caseback shot.

Ressence has maintained its distinct design ethos, and the collaboration with Engelberg brings a playful yet striking look to the Type 8

. However, these limited-edition pieces-priced at $22,500 USD-are certainly more of an artistic statement than a practical daily wear, adding to the brand’s already exclusive nature. With only 40 pieces of each model available, the Type 8 DE1 and DE2 are sure to be a coveted addition for collectors.
