Samsung is taking a more grounded approach to virtual reality (VR) than Apple did with its Apple Vision Pro. The tech giant is set to unveil its XR (Extended Reality) headset, Project Moohan, on September 29 this year. 
Unlike Apple’s ambitious launch of the Vision Pro, which turned heads with its high price tag and exclusive features, Samsung seems to be pursuing a more realistic and targeted approach to its XR comeback.
According to recent reports, Samsung plans a limited release of Project Moohan, initially offering only 100,000 units. To put this into perspective, even the highly anticipated Galaxy G Fold, Samsung’s tri-fold phone, will have more units available, at least 200,000. This reflects the current niche status of the XR market, where demand remains uncertain.
Although Project Moohan will likely come with a hefty price tag, it’s expected to be more affordable than Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro. However, it’s not expected to be in the same price range as the more budget-friendly Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S either. Samsung’s cautious approach here contrasts sharply with Apple’s initial projections for the Vision Pro, which had anticipated massive success but has so far underperformed in sales, with only around half a million units expected to be sold by mid-2025.
While Samsung is setting modest sales goals for Project Moohan, they have learned from the struggles of their foldable phones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, adjusting expectations accordingly. Even though the initial launch will be limited to Korea, there’s potential for Project Moohan to carve out a solid niche if Samsung can offer an experience comparable to the Vision Pro at a more accessible price.
Additionally, Project Moohan should support VR gaming, a key feature that Apple missed with the Vision Pro. If Samsung can continue to lower manufacturing costs, future iterations of the headset may become more affordable, potentially rivaling smart AR glasses from companies like Meta and Apple.
