WhatsApp has officially launched its new AI-powered feature, Message Summaries, which aims to help users quickly catch up on unread messages. This feature is the result of months of testing and development, and it’s now available to users.
So, what exactly does it do?
Message Summaries uses Meta AI to privately and swiftly summarize unread messages in your chats, helping you skip past the noise and get straight to the important content. When you tap on the unread message count in your chat, WhatsApp will generate a bulleted summary of the messages. The best part? The AI generates these summaries on your device, ensuring that no third party, including Meta or WhatsApp, can access your messages.
WhatsApp promises that this feature prioritizes your privacy, utilizing Meta’s Private Processing technology to generate the summaries locally, with no risk of someone else reading your chats. What’s more, you have control over this feature. It’s turned off by default, and you can manage it through the “Advanced chat privacy” setting, which lets you decide which chats are eligible for AI-powered summaries.
Currently, the feature is available to users in the US who speak English, with plans to expand to other regions and languages later this year. So, if you’re always behind on reading your WhatsApp chats, this feature might just save you some time.
