Apple is gearing up for a major update to its iPhone lineup with the release of the iPhone 17 series. Among the most talked-about changes is the base model’s new 6.3-inch display, up from 6.1 inches in the iPhone 16. This increase in screen size is just one of several improvements expected, although the overall external design will remain similar to previous models. The information comes from trusted sources, including Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station and display expert Ross Young, who also claims that the iPhone 17 will share display sizes with its Pro counterparts: the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max will boast a larger 6.9-inch screen.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Air will sport a 6.6-inch display.
In addition to the size bump, the base iPhone 17 is expected to feature a 120Hz refresh rate, offering a smoother scrolling experience, although it won’t have the adaptive LTPO technology seen in the Pro models. This means the refresh rate will be fixed rather than adjusting based on the content being viewed. The front camera is also set for an upgrade, with a 24MP sensor replacing the 12MP camera found on the iPhone 16, promising better selfies and video calls.
On the inside, the iPhone 17 will be powered by the A18 chip, enhancing performance and power efficiency. One of the most exciting rumors is that the base iPhone 17 model will come equipped with 8GB of RAM, matching the Pro models. This added memory will help the device handle more complex tasks and AI applications, ensuring it stays relevant for the years to come. Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 17 lineup in September, along with the new AirPods Pro 3.
Whether the base model will include an Always-On display remains a mystery. Only time will tell if Apple adds this feature to its entry-level offering.
