According to The Information, which cites a single anonymous source, OpenAI has shifted some of its operations away from NVIDIA’s GPUs and towards Google’s specialized chips.

OpenAI has long been associated with NVIDIA for powering its AI products, including ChatGPT, using NVIDIA’s GPUs. However, the report points out that OpenAI is now looking to reduce operating costs, which has led them to turn to Google’s TPUs. Google’s latest TPUs, which were launched in April, are designed to optimize AI chip inference, the process used to generate outputs in response to user queries.

The recent shift comes after OpenAI experienced heavy usage of NVIDIA’s GPUs, particularly when it launched a new image generation platform earlier this year. To address these growing costs, OpenAI is said to be using Google’s TPUs for some of its operations, marking a major departure from its reliance on NVIDIA hardware.

While training AI models is important, the real test for AI chips lies in inferencing, the process by which AI models generate results based on user inputs. Google’s TPUs are optimized for this task, and OpenAI has reportedly turned to them for their ChatGPT and other AI models. Google’s push into the AI chip market, which includes its in-house AI models like Gemini, shows that it’s not just a software giant but also a significant hardware player.

Furthermore, with NVIDIA’s GPUs facing high demand and rising prices, the market for alternative AI chips is opening up. Google’s TPUs may be a viable alternative for other cloud computing infrastructure providers who are also looking to cut costs. If Google succeeds in convincing these providers to adopt its TPUs, it could seriously challenge NVIDIA’s dominance in the AI hardware space.

The Information’s report suggests that Google’s move could ultimately disrupt NVIDIA’s near-monopoly status, especially since OpenAI’s use of Google’s chips would break the longstanding exclusive reliance on NVIDIA’s hardware. It’s also worth noting that Google is not only focused on hardware; the company has been integrating its AI models, including Gemini, into services like Gmail and Google Search, positioning itself as a comprehensive AI player across both hardware and software.
