Borderlands 4 will not see deep discounts or land on subscription services like Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus for at least five years, according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. In a recent comment on X (formerly Twitter), Pitchford was responding to the deep discount of Borderlands 3 during the Steam Summer Sale 2025, which saw the game available for a staggering 95% off its original price.
He noted that it took five years for Borderlands 3 to reach such a steep discount and become available on subscription platforms, encouraging fans to take advantage of the current offer.
Pitchford set expectations for the future, stating that the same situation would likely not occur for Borderlands 4 anytime soon. Though he clarified that pricing and sales decisions are out of his hands, his statement raised eyebrows as fans wonder how long the game will stay full-price. Despite the clarification, it’s clear that Gearbox intends to maximize revenue from Borderlands 4 at launch.
But it’s not just the game’s pricing strategy that will differentiate Borderlands 4 from its predecessors. Chris Brock, the game’s Executive Producer, teased that the new installment will be an evolution of the franchise. Unlike Borderlands 3, which was designed to feel familiar after a seven-year gap since the previous game, Borderlands 4 will introduce new traversal abilities and expanded exploration, promising a fresh experience for fans of the series.
Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and later on Nintendo Switch 2. Fans are excited, though some are already skeptical about whether the pricing strategy will hold in the long run.
