11 bit Studios, the developer behind the acclaimed game The Alters, has admitted to using generative AI during its development process – both intentionally and accidentally.

The studio confirmed that while some AI-generated assets were purposefully used due to time constraints, at least one AI-generated text asset was mistakenly left in the final version, despite being intended as a placeholder.

The controversy erupted shortly after the game’s launch, with players noting oddities in the translations and spotting AI-generated content. Fans were particularly upset that the use of AI wasn’t disclosed on the game’s Steam page, a requirement under Valve’s current policies regarding generative AI in games.

11 bit Studios responded with a detailed statement on the game’s official X account, clarifying that the overlooked asset was an internal oversight, not a deliberate inclusion. “AI-generated assets were used strictly as temporary WIPs during the development process,” the team stated. “Our focus remains on handcrafted storytelling.”

The studio also addressed the poor quality of some translations, admitting that AI was used for localizing several in-game films late in production. This decision, made under deadline pressure, bypassed their usual professional translation partners. The developers now acknowledge this was a misstep and are currently releasing hotfixes with proper translations.

“In hindsight, we acknowledge this was the wrong call. Even more so, we should have just told you,” the studio admitted. They emphasized that only a small portion of the game contains GenAI-generated text and pledged transparency moving forward.

The Alters currently holds a strong Metacritic score of 84, with praise for its compelling narrative and unique character design. However, this incident raises broader questions about how studios are incorporating AI in development – and the importance of transparency with their audiences.

As generative AI becomes increasingly common in the industry, this situation may set a precedent for how disclosure policies are enforced and how studios communicate their development processes to players.
