In an unexpected but welcome update, Google has quietly rolled out a minimalist Google Calendar app specifically for the Apple Watch.
The app arrived without much fanfare in version 25.24.1 of the iPhone app and joins only a small selection of Google services available on watchOS-namely Google Maps, YouTube Music, and Google Keep.
The new Calendar app embraces simplicity. It shows your week’s schedule in a clean list format, including events and Google Tasks. Each item is presented as a color-coded card with the event’s time, title, and location. Tapping on an event opens additional details, though users must turn to the iPhone version to make edits or create new entries.
This mirrors the stripped-down experience offered on Wear OS, making the app a useful glance-at-a-glance companion rather than a productivity powerhouse. There’s currently no indication that Google plans to expand its capabilities further.
To enhance usability, Google has added two watchOS complications. The first, titled “What’s next,” appears in both circular and rectangular formats, showcasing your next scheduled item and integrating seamlessly into the Smart Stack in watchOS 10. A tap takes you directly to the event’s details.
The second complication is a basic circular widget showing today’s date-handy for quick access to the app.
This release is particularly notable given Google’s historically lukewarm support for the Apple Watch. While Maps and YouTube Music received attention, apps like Google Keep have lagged behind with outdated functionality. Adding Google Calendar suggests a possible shift-whether it’s a genuine step forward or just a convenience boost remains to be seen.
For now, the Calendar app adds a touch of practicality to Apple Watch users who rely on Google’s ecosystem, even if it doesn’t yet replace the full experience on iPhone.
