Google has rolled out a new feature that enhances control over your smart home access with the latest Google Home app update.

Version 3.33 introduces the ‘Member’ role, which gives users more control over what others can do within their smart home.

Previously, anyone you invited to your Google Home account was granted Admin access by default. Admins could perform major tasks like adding or removing devices, linking subscriptions, and even deleting the home entirely. For many households, this level of control was excessive, especially for temporary visitors, roommates, or children.

With the update, you now have the option to assign either Admin or Member access. Admins retain full control, but the new Member role lets you customize their capabilities

. Members can control devices like lights, music speakers, smart locks, and thermostats, but you decide whether they can access deeper functions.

The Member role includes two permission options: one for “Settings” access, which lets them manage configurations and home-wide features (such as automations or Nest Wifi), and another for “Activity” access, which allows them to view the history from devices like cameras, locks, and sensors. Without these toggles enabled, Members can still control devices but cannot make any changes or view logs.

This update also marks a significant change for kids under 13. For the first time, they can use the Google Home app. As long as they’re part of your Google family group, they can be added as Members, allowing them to do simple tasks like turning on lights or unlocking the door after school, but without the ability to access sensitive settings or history.

Admins and Members can both access features linked to their personal Google accounts, such as Voice Match and shared media services. However, only Admins can manage users, link subscriptions, or change high-level settings.

The Member role was initially available as a public preview in December 2024, and with the latest full rollout, it is now accessible to all users of the updated Google Home app.

While this might seem like a minor update, it tackles an ongoing issue with smart home sharing-how to grant access without granting excessive control. Whether you’re sharing your home with kids, roommates, or frequent visitors, this new Member role provides a more flexible and secure way to manage your smart devices.
