EA and BioWare have confirmed that Anthem, the failed live-service shooter, will be going offline on January 12, 2026. Almost seven years after its troubled 2019 launch, the servers for this game will be shut down, marking the end of a project that was plagued by disappointment from the start.
Some might be surprised that Anthem is still playable, as many assumed it had already been taken down. Even Wccftech’s Alessio Palumbo expressed surprise, thinking the game had long been buried.
Despite its early struggles, there was hope for Anthem’s recovery. The game had memorable aspects, particularly the exhilarating flying mechanics that left an impression on those who got a chance to experience it. But these positive moments were overshadowed by an overall lackluster experience, as BioWare seemed out of its element with the project. Fans were hopeful for a major turnaround, but the official development on what was dubbed Anthem 2.0 was halted in 2021, and the game has been left to collect dust ever since.
EA’s official blog post shared the bittersweet news: ‘After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026. This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline. We deeply appreciate your dedication, passion, and support over the years and we’d like to thank you for that.’
With just over 190 days left to experience Anthem, players have a short window to revisit a game that ultimately couldn’t live up to the promise it once held.
