With Samsung’s new foldables, Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, just around the corner, it’s time to take a look at what other players are bringing to the table in the foldable space. One such device is the Honor Magic V5, which, on paper, outperforms the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in terms of specs. However, its main downside is that it won’t be available worldwide before Samsung’s new foldables launch.

Plus, Honor’s devices are not available in the U.S. through official channels, further limiting its reach.

But the Magic V5 isn’t Honor’s only offering. The Magic V Flip 2 is set to directly compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 7, though it won’t arrive until later this summer. According to recent reports, the Magic V Flip 2 will feature a large 6.8-inch LTPO folding OLED display with FHD+ resolution, as well as a 4-inch LTPO cover OLED display with the same resolution. This mirrors the Magic V Flip’s display specs, indicating that Honor may not have made any major technological advancements in this area. In contrast, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to sport a 6.85-inch LTPO folding AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2640 pixels and a 4-inch Super AMOLED cover display.

In terms of performance, the Magic V Flip 2 will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 series chipset, though it’s not expected to use the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or 8 Gen 3 Elite chipsets. The device is likely to feature the previous-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which could hold it back compared to Samsung’s newer models. However, the Magic V Flip 2 will come with a significant advantage in battery life, packing a much larger 5,500 mAh battery with support for 66W or 80W wired charging speeds. For context, the original Magic V Flip had a 4,800 mAh battery, and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will still use the same 4,000 mAh battery as the previous generation.

On the camera front, the Magic V Flip 2 will likely sport a dual-camera setup, including a 50-megapixel main sensor with a 1/1.5-inch sensor size. While the second camera hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely that Honor will stick to a similar configuration as the original Magic V Flip, which featured a 50MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. Additionally, the Magic V Flip 2 is expected to retain the 50-megapixel selfie camera that was present in the original model, offering a substantial upgrade over the rumored 10-megapixel front camera in the Galaxy Z Flip 7.

As for the price and availability, the Magic V Flip 2 is expected to debut in China in August 2025, with a possible global release in September. Honor typically announces new products at IFA, a leading consumer electronics trade show, and the global release of the Magic V Flip 2 would fit perfectly into the company’s marketing strategy. While the original Magic V Flip was priced around 5,000 yuan in China (roughly $695 / €590), the Magic V Flip 2 will likely launch at a similar price, with a slight price increase of $100 / €100 if it sees an international release.

Too bad it’s not coming to the US anytime soon. I’d love to see it in action
