best-sellers list. This major leap in popularity, up from No. 135 the previous month, is largely attributed to the ongoing success of the Star Wars series, with particular influence from the hit TV show Andor.

According to data from analytics firm Circana, the renewed interest in Battlefront 2 began with the 20th anniversary re-release of Revenge of the Sith in early May. However, it was the ongoing hype surrounding Andor that drove the game to its highest player count on Steam in years. Ben Amor, an actor from the Andor series, even called for a Battlefront 3 on social media, further fueling the fire.

Analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana told IGN, ‘The player surge for Battlefront 2 began with the Revenge of the Sith re-release and really picked up momentum with Andor.’ He noted that while the game peaked in late May, interest began to wane in early June. However, the game’s presence was bolstered by sales and promotions throughout the summer.

While Battlefront 2 made waves, Elden Ring: Nightreign debuted as the top-selling game for May, landing at No. 1, and has already become the 11th best-selling game of 2025. Doom: The Dark Ages followed closely at No. 2, though its performance didn’t quite match the highs set by its predecessor, Doom: Eternal.

Other notable game debuts included F1 25 at No. 15 and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 at No. 19. Despite some new entries, overall spending on video game content rose 2% year-over-year, hitting $3.7 billion. However, hardware spending saw a significant decline, with a 13% drop compared to the previous year. The Nintendo Switch saw a particularly sharp decline in sales, down by 44%, while PlayStation 5 hardware maintained its lead in both unit and dollar sales.

The overall video game market showed a slight 1% growth, reaching $4.1 billion in total spending. Looking ahead, analysts are closely watching the potential impact of the Nintendo Switch 2 release, which may significantly alter hardware sales in the coming months.
