The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Update 1.2 is here, bringing crucial performance improvements and tweaking the much-needed difficulty settings.
Bethesda has focused on addressing several long-standing issues with quests, gameplay, and general performance, while also making adjustments to damage scaling.
Performance has been a hot topic since Oblivion Remastered’s release. While the game’s success was initially undeniable, with over 4 million players and mostly positive reviews on Steam, there’s been a persistent issue with performance. Consoles, in particular, have seen significant struggles, as noted by Digital Foundry’s Thomas Morgan, who criticized the game’s Unreal Engine 5 overhaul. Morgan pointed out that a longer playthrough often leads to worse performance compared to a fresh save, and bugs appear when cycling through saves. One particularly annoying issue was the camera’s height while riding horseback, which required a game reset to fix. Fortunately, the update addresses this with a fix for ‘player character height scaling.’
Despite these hurdles, Oblivion Remastered’s visual and gameplay improvements have been well-received by fans. The game now runs at 4K resolution with 60 frames per second, and it includes changes to leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. A new third-person view, lip sync technology, and more dialogue add to the experience, making many believe the title leans more toward a remake than a simple remaster.
However, the update doesn’t come without its share of complaints. Some users still face issues, including crashes, poor PC performance, and even bugs like invisible characters and long shader loading times. Yet, Bethesda seems committed to making improvements, and fans are cautiously optimistic about the game’s future. The update is currently available through Steam Beta, with further updates likely to address additional stability issues and refine the overall experience.
For those eager to join the update, simply opt into the Steam Beta and enjoy the latest build. But as some players point out, the game might still need a bit more polish before it’s truly ready for prime time.
