Apple’s Foldable iPhone: A Crease-Free Screen Powered by Samsung Display

Rumors are swirling once again that Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone will feature a groundbreaking crease-free folding screen, produced by none other than Samsung Display. This is a significant development, as Apple typically customizes every part of its devices, but in this case, it’s Samsung taking the lead in designing the display. The reason behind this decision is believed to be Apple’s desire to ensure smooth mass production of the foldable iPhone, which is expected to launch in the second half of next year.

A custom display might not have been able to achieve the same production yields as Samsung’s proven design.

According to sources, Apple’s choice to go with Samsung’s crease-free solution also benefits suppliers like Fine M-Tec, a key provider of internal hinges for the foldable screen. Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known figure in the Apple supply chain, claims that Fine M-Tec will dominate the market for these components, holding a massive 80% market share.

The internal hinge plays a crucial role in preventing creases by distributing bending stress evenly across the display, ensuring the material doesn’t reach its elastic limit. This ingenious integration of the hinge and display system is the secret behind the screen’s crease-free performance, a collaboration between Samsung Display and Fine M-Tec.

To enhance the durability and crease resistance, laser drilling will be employed to create microstructures within the metal plates. These microstructures help guide stress distribution and minimize creasing. Fine M-Tec is expected to start shipping the metal plates for the foldable iPhone in the first quarter of next year, with unit prices ranging between $30-35.

While the initial shipments are expected to reach 13-15 million units by 2026, it’s important to note that these are not the projected sales for the iPhone Fold itself. Due to yield losses and the need for repair stock, more units will be produced than the actual number of iPhone Folds sold.
