Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are expected to set new pre-order records in South Korea, according to analysts closely monitoring the market. Last year, the Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 hit an impressive 1.02 million pre-orders in their home country, a benchmark that remains unbeaten.
However, the Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 from 2024 didn’t quite match that level of demand.
As of June 24, pre-order reservations for the new foldables have already surpassed 160,000 within just 14 days, even before the official unveiling on July 9. This number is being used as an early indicator of record-breaking demand for the Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 in Korea. It’s unclear whether figures for the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE are included in these initial numbers, but they could be part of the overall pre-order count for the Z Flip7.
However, it’s important to note that the South Korean market is influenced by factors beyond just the device’s quality and upgrades. SK Telecom, one of the country’s largest telecom providers, has recently faced a security breach, which has caused some of its subscribers to leave. This shift in subscriber base has benefitted competitors like KT and LG U+, who are eager to attract those looking for a new carrier. In response, SK Telecom has rolled out attractive deals on the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 to regain its market share.
Additionally, a recent change in the law has allowed telecom carriers to offer larger subsidies on devices, as the Device Distribution Improvement Act, which once required full transparency of subsidy details, has been repealed. Previously, carriers could offer up to KRW 500,000 in subsidies, but with the new rule changes, they can now offer even more to entice new customers. Samsung is undoubtedly happy about this, as the increased carrier subsidies could help push even more units of the new foldables.
In terms of pricing, the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are being offered at premium prices, with the Z Fold7 starting at €2,099 or £1,799 for the 256GB version and the Z Flip7 at €1,199 or £1,049 for the base model.
