Warner Bros. has just dropped the latest trailer for Mortal Kombat II, the hotly anticipated follow-up to the 2021 reboot. The sequel is set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025, and this time, it’s bringing one of the most iconic characters in the franchise front and center-Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.
Absent from the previous film, Cage is finally entering the fight, and the trailer makes it clear that he’s not just comic relief-he’s part of the heart of the action.
Urban’s take feels a bit grittier than fans might expect, with Cage realizing pretty quickly that cracking jokes won’t save him from getting his face smashed in at the tournament. Still, his signature charisma is intact-just buried under the pressure of surviving Mortal Kombat.
While the trailer teases high-stakes fights and some flashy choreography, reactions to the CGI have been mixed. A scene featuring Scorpion slicing Noob Saibot in half felt more like an unfinished cutscene than a polished Hollywood moment. Some fans are raising eyebrows, wondering if we’re headed for another case of style-over-substance.
Still, the hope is that Mortal Kombat II will double down on what made the 2021 movie enjoyable-bone-crunching, over-the-top action. With Cage finally in the spotlight, there’s at least one reason for longtime fans to stay optimistic, even if the story itself still seems like an afterthought. The real fight begins in October.
