Reports have surfaced that some Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 units are having trouble opening fully flat, raising concerns about the durability of the device’s hinge. While it’s still uncertain whether this is a significant issue, it’s definitely worth noting. Photos shared on Reddit appear to show demo units with the same problem, where the hinge struggles to snap properly, leaving the device slightly open. 
However, the original poster did mention that the issue could be resolved with some force, suggesting it’s not a case of a completely faulty hinge, but perhaps a minor flaw.
The cause of this issue is still up for debate. It could be due to a manufacturing defect, rough handling (though this seems unlikely for brand new units), or the possibility that these are preproduction units that didn’t meet the final build quality. It’s also possible that users simply didn’t open the phone all the way, whether intentionally or not. For what it’s worth, our own review unit has not experienced this issue.
As of now, Samsung has not confirmed any widespread manufacturing defect or announced any recalls. The Galaxy Z Fold7 features the newly designed Armor FlexHinge, which is intended to minimize display creases and offer better durability by distributing stress more evenly across the fold. However, Samsung has yet to release any official durability cycle data for the Z Fold7’s hinge. We do know the Z Fold6 was rated for over 200,000 open-close cycles without issue, which bodes well for the Z Fold7’s hinge. Also, the “zero-gap” hinge introduced with the Z Fold5 had a tolerance range of between 178.5 and 181.5 degrees when fully open, and anything outside this range would typically be covered by warranty. It’s possible the Z Fold7’s hinge has a similar tolerance, but we’ll have to wait for more detailed information.
