The Nintendo Switch 2 has made history as the fastest-selling gaming hardware in the US, surpassing previous records set by the PlayStation 4. According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, the Switch 2 sold 1.6 million units in its first month, beating the PS4’s 1.1 million in debut sales. The console’s success didn’t stop there: just four days post-launch, the Switch 2 had already sold 3.5 million units globally, doubling the original Switch’s sales rate.

This impressive start reflects a worldwide craze for the Switch 2, especially in the US, where it dominated hardware sales in both units and revenue for June 2025, outpacing even the PlayStation 5.

Despite its early success, the PS5 remains the best-selling console of 2025 so far. However, with the Switch 2’s momentum, there’s a strong possibility that this could change by year’s end. A key contributor to its early success is the fact that 82% of Switch 2 owners in the US bought Mario Kart World, either as part of a bundle or separately. Additionally, games like Cyberpunk 2077, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, and The Legend of Zelda series also contributed to the Switch 2’s top rankings in software sales.

Another noteworthy trend is the performance of certain third-party titles. Elden Ring: Nightreign, which has continued to sell well, found itself in the top 10 best-selling games of the year, taking the number eight spot, while Death Stranding 2: On the Beach lagged behind, unable to break into the top 20 despite its success on PlayStation 5. Stellar Blade also made an impressive jump on the sales charts, securing second place in the PC market.

The Nintendo Switch 2’s dominance in 2025 has not only revolutionized hardware sales but also reshaped expectations for the console market. Analysts are already projecting it will sell 16 million units globally by the end of the year, and with sales surpassing 5 million in June alone, it’s clear the Switch 2 is on track to continue its record-breaking trajectory.
