AMD’s Next-Gen Radeon GPUs to Feature HDMI 2.2 with 80 Gbps Bandwidth

AMD is gearing up for its next-gen Radeon GPUs based on the GFX13 architecture, and the latest rumors suggest exciting updates in terms of display capabilities. The upcoming GPUs will feature HDMI 2.2, with bandwidths reaching up to 80 Gbps, a notable upgrade over the HDMI 2.1 specification seen in the RDNA 4 GPUs.

The HDMI 2.1 standard maxes out at 48 Gbps, whereas HDMI 2.2 could theoretically hit 96 Gbps, providing a significant boost for high-resolution, high-refresh-rate displays.

While these GPUs won’t arrive until 2026, information about their display technology is already circulating. AMD’s implementation of HDMI 2.2 is set to enable features such as uncompressed 4K at 240Hz, 8K at 240Hz, and even 12K at 120Hz, alongside future-proofing options like higher chroma sampling and support for both compressed and uncompressed video formats. This gives gamers, content creators, and VR/AR developers exciting prospects for next-gen content delivery and immersive experiences.

The next-gen Radeon GPUs are expected to support multiple resolutions and refresh rates, including 4K at 480Hz and 5K at 240Hz, ensuring that they remain relevant as content demand continues to grow. As for the DisplayPort side of things, Kepler_L2 reports that AMD will likely continue to support DisplayPort 2.1 with the UHBR20 and UHBR13.5 specifications for professional and consumer-level cards, respectively. These updates provide additional flexibility, though they are still behind the 80-96 Gbps bandwidth offered by HDMI 2.2.

However, while these specs may sound impressive, it’s important to remember that HDMI 2.2’s full potential is largely theoretical at this stage. The reality of how these new Radeon GPUs will perform in real-world usage remains to be seen, and until they launch, many of these specs remain speculative. Still, AMD is setting up its GPUs for the future, ready to cater to an ever-evolving display technology landscape.
