Android users might soon get a feature similar to Apple’s Contact Posters, which could enhance the way we look during calls. A recent teardown of the Google Contacts app has revealed hints of an upcoming feature called “calling cards.” Currently under development, these calling cards would allow users to customize how they appear when calling others.
The first clues came from Android Authority, who found new strings in version 4.55 of the Google Contacts app.
These strings mention using a profile image not just as a contact photo but also as a calling card. While the details are still unclear, this suggests a feature that links your photo with a personalized call screen.
What’s more interesting is the discovery of references to full-screen images and custom fonts, features similar to Apple’s Contact Posters in iOS 17. iPhone users can personalize their photo and name display during a call, and Google seems to be working on a similar experience for Android. Apple’s feature is also connected to NameDrop, which lets users share contact info just by holding their phones together.
In Google’s case, more code references in Google Play Services indicate that calling cards may sync to the cloud, making them accessible across multiple Android devices. This would allow users to set up a card once and have it appear on all their devices, providing a consistent and personalized experience.
If Google officially rolls out this feature, it could modernize the Android call interface, which has remained largely unchanged over the years. Many Android users already have profile pictures linked to their Google accounts, so using that image for calls could be an easy way to add some personality to the call screen.
However, it’s worth noting that APK teardowns only reveal features under development and don’t guarantee their release. Google has yet to confirm anything about calling cards. Still, the feature makes sense, especially with iOS offering a similar function. It would be a nice touch for users who want to make their calls feel more personal. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see if it actually launches.
