Apple has begun showing energy efficiency labels for iPhones and iPads on its European websites, complying with new EU regulations that came into effect on June 20. Under the new rules, manufacturers are required to include these labels with smartphone and tablet sales across the EU.

While the physical boxes may vary, Apple is now prominently featuring these labels on its product and purchase pages online.

Clicking the new icon on an iPhone or iPad page reveals a detailed energy label that rates the product’s efficiency on a scale from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). Accompanying the label is a product information sheet, which offers details such as battery capacity, scratch resistance (based on the Mohs scale), repairability, IP rating, and the duration for which security updates will be available.

Interestingly, Apple has chosen to voluntarily lower some of its product ratings despite initially qualifying for the top-tier “A” score. According to Apple, they did this to avoid potential discrepancies from varying interpretations of the EU’s testing procedures. For instance, all iPhone models sold in the EU in June 2025 technically achieved an “A” for energy efficiency, but Apple displayed them as “B” instead to prevent inconsistency in third-party testing outcomes.

They applied the same caution to drop scores in the “Repeated Free Fall Reliability Class” as well. Apple’s move highlights the ongoing tension between tech manufacturers and regulatory ambiguity, especially when it comes to standardized global testing.

Despite some skepticism around Apple’s tone and transparency, this step gives consumers in the EU clearer information on sustainability and longevity-two growing priorities in electronics purchases.
