Apple is reportedly breaking its usual release cycle for the upcoming MacBook Pro lineup, with insider Mark Gurman sharing some intriguing details. According to his sources, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, codenamed J714 and J716, will feature the next-generation M5 chip and are expected to launch early next year. This marks a deviation from Apple’s usual October or November releases for MacBook Pro models, with the last update coming in October 2023.
Interestingly, this delay in the MacBook Pro release cycle could signal the end of the current design, which debuted in 2021. The next iteration may come with a fresh case design and the introduction of OLED displays. Apple has already adopted OLED technology for its iPhones since 2017 and for iPads since 2024, and now it’s likely making its way to the MacBook Pro lineup for better contrast and vibrant displays.
In addition to the MacBook Pro updates, Gurman also mentions that new MacBook Air models (codenamed J813 and J815) are expected to drop in the first half of next year. These will feature the M4 chip and build on the existing MacBook Air, which launched earlier this year. Not much else is known about these new models, but they are expected to be released alongside other updates.
As for the rumored ‘affordable’ MacBook featuring an A18 Pro chip, Gurman’s report does not mention this device, implying that it may not arrive with the new MacBook Pro or Air lineup. Some speculation suggested a MacBook powered by the M3 Ultra chip, but this seems to be a canceled project, as it is not referenced in the report.
Despite the slower release pace, Gurman suggests that spacing out MacBook launches is a smart move, as it gives each model room to shine without overwhelming consumers with constant upgrades. With the possibility of an all-new design and OLED displays, many might opt to hold off on upgrading until these exciting features are available.
While some leaks hinted at a high-performance M3-Ultra-powered MacBook Pro, Gurman’s report emphasizes that the M5 MacBook Pro will still deliver exceptional performance and battery life, likely making it a worthwhile option for those who need top-tier productivity.

Wonder if they’re going to bring any major performance boost with the M5 chip. M1 was a game changer, so M5 better be even faster
