Atomic Heart II is officially in development, as confirmed by Mundfish during Summer Game Fest. A cinematic and gameplay-infused trailer teased a much larger and more ambitious sequel that aims to expand beyond the first game’s limits.
Though no release window has been shared, the studio confirmed that Atomic Heart II is coming to PC and consoles.
Unlike the original, which leaned heavily into first-person shooter mechanics with a narrative that left some players wanting more, the sequel is said to focus more on RPG elements. According to Geoff Keighley, the game is being built as a ‘spiritual successor’ rather than a direct continuation. That may be a nod to the criticism of the first game’s story and unfinished side plots-something fans hope will be resolved in this installment.
The trailer sparked both excitement and skepticism. Visually, the game looks stunning, showing off volumetric lighting, transparent materials, and an unmistakable influence from retro-futuristic Soviet sci-fi art. But not all fans are convinced. Some worry the footage shown was from a high-end PC build, and that the console versions will receive a downgrade. Others are still wary of Mundfish’s storytelling chops, noting that the first game’s plot felt like a deliberate setup for sequels rather than a self-contained arc.
In addition to Atomic Heart II, Mundfish also unveiled a brand-new IP titled The Cube. Details on this project remain scarce, but its announcement indicates the studio is confident and looking to diversify its portfolio.
Wccftech’s Alessio Palumbo praised the first game for its technical performance and aesthetic design but criticized its storytelling and shallow side content. If Mundfish can tighten the narrative, deepen the RPG mechanics, and maintain its eye-catching art style, Atomic Heart II might just become the breakout title the studio was reaching for the first time around.
