Gearbox Software is setting high expectations for Borderlands 4, promising the best endgame yet in the series. 
The team’s creative director, Graeme Timmins, shared his thoughts in an interview with Game Informer, emphasizing the importance of a solid endgame for the new title.
Timmins revealed that he personally cared deeply about the endgame design, especially after his involvement in shaping the endgame for Borderlands 3. “I know what’s important to our community,” Timmins said, “and we’ve already integrated that into the game’s design.” He explained that the developers made careful choices regarding the Action Skill tree to ensure that the game’s future endgame would be well-prepared from the outset.
The endgame aspect of Borderlands has always been crucial for the longevity of the game, with Gearbox regularly introducing level-cap increases over time. Timmins explained how Borderlands 4’s Action Skill tree is already designed to accommodate these future expansions, aiming to avoid the issue of “homogeneous builds” that often occur when players unlock all skills. With Borderlands 3, the skill points maxed out at 72, leading to less diversity in builds, something the team wants to avoid this time around.
In addition to improving the core systems, Timmins hinted that lessons learned from Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and previous Borderlands titles will shape the design of the endgame in Borderlands 4. While details on the final version remain under wraps, Timmins is confident that they have crafted a game that can keep players engaged for a long time after launch.
The excitement around the game is palpable, especially with the launch date now set for September 12, a week earlier than initially expected. Fans of the franchise are eager to see if Borderlands 4 can deliver on its promises of a dynamic, engaging endgame.
