Breitling has been making waves in the watch world lately, and their new Superocean Heritage B31 Automatic collection is no exception. With its retro-inspired design and modern upgrades, the collection presents a compelling case for both dive watch enthusiasts and casual collectors alike. 
These timepieces offer a nod to the brand’s iconic ‘50s heritage while adopting a refined, more sophisticated aesthetic that’s sure to turn heads.
The new collection sees a complete rework of the Superocean Heritage series, bringing in a more nuanced look with higher-performance specs. Available in 44mm, 42mm, and 40mm sizes, each model has its own unique appeal. The stainless steel case is noticeably more elegant, with a curved profile that distinguishes it from previous models. The reshaped screw-down crown also adds a refined touch, making the watch feel more distinctive on the wrist.
While the broader, minimalist ceramic dive bezel remains a staple of the design, it now features a slight overhang and more intricate notches that give it a commanding presence. Available in black, green, and blue dials, the collection exudes an air of clean sophistication. However, the 40mm version strangely doesn’t come in blue, which has raised some eyebrows. It’s a curious choice given the color’s popularity in the lineup.
Each model comes with varying lug-to-lug lengths and thicknesses, offering different fit options depending on wrist size. The 44mm version is the largest, measuring a hefty 52.44mm lug-to-lug, while the 40mm model offers a more compact fit. Despite these differences, all models share a sapphire display caseback and are rated for 200 meters of water resistance, making them truly dive-ready.
On the dial side, Breitling has significantly refined the details. The hour markers now feature faceted dagger indices, while the handset has been reshaped for a more elegant look
. The arrow-tipped hour hand is notably wider and more substantial, evoking the boldness of the ‘50s designs. Sunburst finishes in black, green, and blue elevate the dial, giving it a modern yet vintage appeal.
The heart of this collection is the Breitling B31 movement, a new automatic caliber designed for high performance. Though not entirely in-house (manufactured by Sellita), it’s clear that Breitling had significant input in its development. With a power reserve of 78 hours and COSC chronometer certification, the B31 is a true workhorse. The movement’s finishing is also impressive, with Côtes de Genève decoration and polished anglage adding a touch of luxury.
To complete the package, Breitling offers two strap options: a classic stainless steel Milanese bracelet and a rubber deployant strap. The Milanese bracelet, with its fine detailing and fitted endlinks, complements the vintage-inspired look perfectly. The rubber straps, available in matching black, green, or blue, provide an alternative that’s sporty yet refined.
Despite its growing reputation, Breitling’s dive watches have struggled to compete with other heavyweights in the market. The Superocean Heritage B31 Automatic collection, however, might just be the series that changes that. With its enhanced design, solid movement, and historical roots, it’s poised to become a favorite among collectors.
