Build a Rocket Boy’s CEO, Leslie Benzies, recently addressed the company after the launch of MindsEye, blaming both internal and external forces for the game’s struggles. In a brief video call on July 2, Benzies shared his thoughts with staff, suggesting that the studio will recover and that MindsEye will be relaunched, despite the significant challenges it faces.
He pointed fingers at supposed saboteurs-both within the company and outside-who are undermining the game’s and studio’s success.
This isn’t the first time such claims have been made. Last month, co-CEO Mark Gerhard voiced concerns about a concerted effort to tarnish the game’s and the studio’s reputation. While the studio remains optimistic about a potential relaunch, things have taken a turn for the worse. Layoffs seem imminent as emails about job cuts have been sent to around 300 employees at Build a Rocket Boy and PlayFusion, which was acquired by BARB in 2024.
As the situation worsens, MindsEye has increasingly been viewed as one of the most disastrous game launches in recent history. The early signs of trouble were evident before the release, with two key executives leaving the studio just days before the game’s launch. With the technical and gameplay issues that plagued the release, a relaunch now seems like a monumental challenge. The looming layoffs at the studio only add to the uncertainty, raising questions about whether there are real plans to fix the game and how these plans will unfold.
