Bungie Announces Layoffs and Collaboration with PlayStation Studios

Bungie Announces Layoffs and Restructuring Plans

Destiny developer Bungie has recently revealed significant restructuring plans that include the elimination of 220 roles, which constitute around 17% of the studio’s workforce. The announcement was made by Pete Parsons, the CEO of Bungie, in a blog post titled “The New Path for Bungie.”

The decision to downsize has been attributed to the increasing costs of development, industry changes, and ongoing economic challenges. As part of the restructuring, Bungie aims to focus its development efforts primarily on Destiny and the upcoming game, Marathon.

In response to the layoffs, Bungie is providing a comprehensive exit package that encompasses severance, bonuses, and health coverage for the affected employees. Parsons emphasized that the layoffs will impact individuals across all levels of the organization, from junior positions to executive roles.

Moreover, Bungie is set to deepen its integration with Sony Interactive Entertainment, with 155 roles being gradually transitioned to Sony’s team. This collaboration aims to retain valuable talent and facilitate a more streamlined operational structure.

Additionally, Bungie is collaborating with PlayStation Studios to establish a new studio focused on an action game set in a novel science-fantasy universe. This venture represents a strategic move to diversify Bungie’s portfolio alongside Destiny and the reimagined Marathon series.

Despite the layoffs, Bungie remains committed to delivering exceptional gaming experiences, with a dedicated team of over 850 members continuing the development of Destiny and Marathon projects.

The restructuring efforts are a response to the financial challenges faced by Bungie, exacerbated by the reception of Destiny 2: Lightfall. Parsons acknowledged the need for realistic goals and sustainable financial practices to ensure the quality and success of future projects.

While the layoffs mark a significant transformation for Bungie, the studio is poised to navigate these changes and evolve its creative endeavors in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation Studios.
