Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Brings Co-Op Campaign, Futuristic Madness, and Yet Another Cross-Gen Launch
During the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, Activision officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, marking another entry in the long-running franchise. The teaser trailer, though light on gameplay, confirmed a shift in setting: the year 2035, decades after the events of Black Ops 6. What’s also confirmed-like it or not-is that Call of Duty will continue supporting last-gen consoles for at least one more year. Yes, that means PS4 and Xbox One are still in play, along with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The campaign, led by Raven Software with Treyarch heading the broader development, introduces a more fantastical tone. Fans can expect a wild, narrative-driven experience, now playable entirely in co-op. Actor Milo Ventimiglia (of This Is Us) takes on the role of protagonist David Mason, adding more star power to a franchise that’s becoming known for its Hollywood cameos.
While many fans are excited about the shift to co-op campaigns and the futuristic setting, there’s frustration in the community around the franchise’s business practices. A growing number of players are demanding meaningful changes-like mod tools, map editors, dedicated servers, and the removal of regenerating health-to bring the series closer to its roots. These voices feel ignored as the series continues its cycle of annual releases with minimal innovation.
“Black Ops 7 is about embracing the chaos,” said Tyler Bahl, Activision’s head of publishing. “With the back-to-back Black Ops entries, we’re exploring new narrative possibilities while staying true to the series’ intense action.” But as the community watches another polished trailer drop, many can’t help but see the series as a well-oiled, money-printing machine more focused on volume than vision.
As we wait for the full reveal this summer, Activision teases more surprises, and the fans remain divided: nostalgic, hopeful, but increasingly skeptical. Will Black Ops 7 be the reinvention the series needs-or just another coat of futuristic paint on the same formula?
