The long-lost open world Dungeons & Dragons RPG from Hidden Path Entertainment has finally surfaced-at least in visuals.
Originally announced in March 2021, this ambitious third-person RPG aimed to deliver a true open-world D&D experience. Hidden Path, best known for Defense Grid and work on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, was staffing up for the project with open roles like Graphics Programmer and Writer, teasing something big.
Unfortunately, the dream was cut short. In January 2023, Wizards of the Coast-holder of the D&D license-pulled the plug on multiple games, including Hidden Path’s and one by Otherside Entertainment. Despite initial pushback from Hidden Path, which insisted the project wasn’t canceled yet, the studio had to officially let go of the project in February 2024, alongside laying off 44 team members.
Now, thanks to MP1st’s discovery of a former developer’s portfolio, fans can get a sneak peek at what could’ve been. The project, codenamed Project Dante, featured a standard third-person action RPG design with stealth mechanics and companion-based gameplay-fitting for a D&D title. Gameplay footage of a mission is now available online, along with an Imgur gallery full of stunning concept art.
Though Project Dante will never see release, the world of Dungeons & Dragons video games remains far from empty. Upcoming titles include:
- Demeo x DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: Battlemarked – releasing later this year
- A cooperative multiplayer game from Starbreeze, scheduled for 2026
- A new title from Invoke, creators of Dark Alliance
- A newly announced action/adventure game from Giant Skull
Project Dante may be gone, but D&D fans still have much to look forward to.
