OpenAI has taken a bold leap forward by transforming ChatGPT into more than just a chatbot-it’s now an AI agent that can actually carry out tasks for you.
Dubbed ChatGPT Agent, this new feature integrates various OpenAI tools like Operator and Deep Research into one powerhouse assistant.
This isn’t about passive Q&A anymore. Whether it’s checking your calendar, ordering groceries, creating a presentation, or organizing a dinner party, you can now simply type what you need and ChatGPT will make it happen-just like a real digital assistant. It even connects with popular services like Gmail, Google Drive, and GitHub using what’s called Connectors, so it can pull relevant data and take real action.
Importantly, the agent doesn’t act without your say-so. It asks for permission before performing any task and allows you to jump in or stop it at any time, putting you firmly in control.
If you’re using ChatGPT Pro, Plus, or Team, you may already have access-just enable “agent mode” or type /agent
. Enterprise and Education accounts will follow later this summer. Users in Europe and Switzerland, however, will have to wait a bit longer due to regulatory hurdles.
Of course, a tool this powerful comes with concerns. OpenAI says it’s taking safety seriously: there’s real-time monitoring of interactions, a built-in filter for sensitive prompt categories, and memory is turned off by default to prevent misuse like prompt injections. They say memory might come back eventually-but only with proper safeguards.
Whether you see it as a productivity game-changer or a privacy red flag, it’s clear this is the next big step in AI. Google’s also entering the agent game, letting users ask Search to contact businesses directly. AI isn’t just chatting anymore-it’s doing.
