China Mobile has just announced an impressive milestone in its 6G development, revealing that they have achieved the ability to download a 50GB file in an astonishing 1.4 seconds. This breakthrough dwarfs the capabilities of 5G, which can only manage much slower speeds in comparison. With predictions for 6G to officially arrive by 2030, there’s speculation it could be rolled out even earlier, possibly by 2028.
Leading the charge in 6G experimentation, China and the U.S. are pushing ahead with trials to ensure their wireless systems can deliver significantly faster speeds.
At the recent China Internet Conference in 2025, China Mobile shared news of its success, having spent 39.1 billion yuan ($5.46 billion) on research and development. The company is also leading four national scientific and technological projects related to 6G and is responsible for some of the top advancements in the field. During their small-scale 6G trial, China Mobile demonstrated the ability to achieve speeds of 280Gbps, which is 14 times faster than the peak bandwidth of 5G.
This breakthrough means that downloading a 50GB file now takes under 2 seconds-comparable to downloading a 2-hour 4K Blu-ray movie in just 2 seconds. The speed is so fast that it even surpasses some wired connection speeds, which is a major leap in the world of mobile networks. China Mobile’s successful small-scale 6G network, with 10 deployed research sites, is a major step forward. Additionally, China Mobile launched the world’s first high-speed satellite in February last year. Operating at an altitude of just 500 kilometers, the satellite can transmit data at remarkable speeds, a feat that conventional satellites at 36,000 kilometers cannot match due to their limited bandwidth.
