Chrome for Android Finally Lets You Move the Address Bar to the Bottom
Android users, rejoice – Google Chrome version 138 now brings a long-awaited feature that could make your browsing life way more convenient: the ability to move the address bar to the bottom of your screen.
This change is especially handy for those using phones with large displays. The idea was originally floated back in 2016 but quietly shelved by Google. Ironically, iOS users got this feature first when Google added it to Chrome in 2023 to match Safari’s 2021 redesign. Now, Android finally catches up.
To switch the address bar to the bottom, make sure you’ve updated your Chrome app to version 138 or later. Then, open Chrome, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, go to Settings > Address Bar, and choose Bottom.
If you don’t see this option, double-check your Chrome version. Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > See all apps > Chrome. Scroll down to see the app version at the bottom of the info page. If it’s not version 138 or higher, update the app via the Play Store. Still no luck? Try force-stopping the app – sometimes doing it twice triggers the change.
Once enabled, both the address bar and the three-dot menu will relocate to the bottom, making one-handed browsing much easier. Don’t worry – you can always move the bar back to the top if you prefer. Just head back to settings or long-press the bar itself to toggle its position.
It’s a small tweak, but it makes a noticeable difference in daily usability. And after years of waiting, it’s good to see Android getting the same thoughtful UX options iPhone users have enjoyed for a while.
