When you think of Cyberpunk 2077, the first thing that probably comes to mind isn’t the game’s romances, but according to Josh Sawyer, the mind behind Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, and Pentiment, they might just be some of the best RPG romances out there.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Sawyer praised how Cyberpunk 2077’s romantic storylines are distinctively separated from the rest of the game, setting them apart from the typical RPG setup. Instead of romantic moments taking place in the midst of your party, with everyone nearby, Cyberpunk’s relationships feel more private and personal. Sawyer explained that these romances unfold away from the group dynamic, allowing the characters to have intimate, standalone moments. For example, after a conversation with Judy, the character leaves and doesn’t reappear until certain story events have passed, offering a sense of pacing and development unique to the relationship between the player and that character. He acknowledged that while some aspects of these romances could be improved, this design was a refreshing change of pace from the usual party-based interactions. Sawyer also mentioned the production quality, noting that while Obsidian, his studio, doesn’t specialize in high-end cutscenes, studios like CD Projekt Red, BioWare, and Larian are known for their exceptional work in this area. Whether you agree with Sawyer’s take on Cyberpunk’s romances or not, it’s clear that the game has sparked a conversation about RPG romance in general.
