Cyberpunk 2077 just got a major performance boost-especially for PS5 Pro users-thanks to Patch 2.3, which added VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support across consoles.
And while there’s still no official PS5 Pro-specific update, tech analysts at Digital Foundry say this is basically the next best thing.
CD Projekt RED previously claimed they were done updating the game and had no plans for a dedicated PS5 Pro patch. But just like that, Patch 2.3 rolled out with VRR support, suggesting they might be sneaking in improvements without a full-blown announcement.
According to Digital Foundry’s testing, VRR is doing wonders for PS5 Pro users. With the framerate unlocked in Performance mode, the game runs between 80 to 90 FPS, offering a smoother and noticeably upgraded experience. “It’s significantly better overall,” said DF’s John Linneman in the latest DF Direct Weekly episode.
On the other hand, base PS5 users won’t notice much change. Performance mode still hovers around 60 FPS-same as before-and Quality mode remains locked at 30 FPS. Even with ray tracing enabled, base models just don’t benefit much from VRR. But the PS5 Pro sees a nice bump even in Quality mode, managing 40 FPS with ray tracing.
Digital Foundry also notes that there’s still headroom for optimization. Areas like ray-traced reflections and general frame stability in some parts of Night City still struggle to consistently hit 60 FPS. So while this update doesn’t fully unleash the PS5 Pro’s potential, it’s a meaningful step forward.
Ultimately, if you’ve invested in Sony’s beefier console, Cyberpunk 2077 now gives you something tangible to show for it. And although there’s no official ‘PS5 Pro patch’ yet, VRR support is giving players a taste of what such an update could deliver-smoother frames, better responsiveness, and a more immersive experience in the neon-soaked chaos of Night City.
