CD Projekt has officially announced the long-awaited Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a brand-new Netflix anime series set in the gritty world of Cyberpunk 2077. Fans of the first season, which was a hit with both viewers and critics, will be thrilled to know that the creative minds behind the original are back. The studio Trigger, responsible for the vibrant animation of the first series, returns to work on this follow-up.
Directed by Kai Ikarashi and written by Bartosz Sztybor, who also serves as the showrunner and producer, Edgerunners 2 promises to bring a fresh, raw narrative to the table.
While there’s no trailer yet, the reveal includes a new logo and poster art, setting the stage for a standalone 10-episode journey. Described as “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge,” the new season will explore what it takes to make a story stand out in a world driven by spectacle. The tagline “When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?” hints at the deep and emotional narrative waiting for viewers.
“David’s story might be over, but there’s still so much more to uncover in Night City,” said Sztybor, teasing fans with the possibility of new characters and darker plots. The creative team is excited to work with Trigger once again to bring a bold, raw story to life, offering something different from what fans have seen before. Kanno Ichigo, the character designer from Promare and the original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, returns to shape the visual aesthetic, while Masahiko Otsuka, known for his work on Gurren Lagann and Promare, will handle the screenplay adaptation.
The announcement of Edgerunners 2 comes as little surprise, given the success of the first season, which even helped boost interest in the Cyberpunk 2077 game. The show’s critical success was undeniable, with IGN rating it a 9/10 and praising its ability to dive deeper into the iconic world of Night City.
While we still know very little about the plot, fans are excited for more, and with CD Projekt’s ongoing work on Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4, it’s clear that the Cyberpunk universe is thriving. Although details about the sequel are scarce, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith has hinted at new and previously unknown elements in the upcoming game.
