Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 – A New Chapter Begins in Night City

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Officially Confirmed

During the highly anticipated Anime Expo in Los Angeles, CD PROJEKT RED and renowned animation studio TRIGGER made an exciting announcement: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is officially in the works. This comes as a big surprise, especially given the company’s statement back in October 2022 that suggested the series would not continue. Now, it’s clear that the cyberpunk universe is far from over.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will be a standalone anime series consisting of 10 episodes, set within the gritty world of Cyberpunk 2077. Bartosz Sztybor, the Hugo Award-winning writer, showrunner, story writer, and producer for the series, shared his enthusiasm: “David’s story may be over, but there’s still so much left to explore in Night City. And we’re thrilled to have the legendary TRIGGER studio on board again to bring this raw, intense narrative of redemption and revenge to life – something totally new compared to what we’ve done before.”

Joining Sztybor are Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) as the lead character designer, and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), who will handle the screenplay adaptation. The anime will be available on Netflix, though the exact release date is still unknown.

The first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which premiered in September 2022, received overwhelming positive feedback, holding a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. More importantly, it played a significant role in revitalizing interest in Cyberpunk 2077. The timing of Patch 1.6’s release alongside the anime series was a strategic move by CD PROJEKT RED, adding a variety of new features such as the Wardrobe feature, cross-platform progression, new missions, weapons, and fixes. As a result, player numbers surged, and the game’s reputation began to improve.

While it’s unclear whether CD PROJEKT RED will release additional content for Cyberpunk 2077 to complement the new series, it seems unlikely. The studio is currently focused on The Witcher 4 project, which is expected to take up much of their resources.

Man, I loved season 1, but making a 2nd season seems like a cash grab… smh 🤦‍♂️

Honestly, if it ain’t David, what’s the point? They should’ve left it as a one-off masterpiece!
