Wizards of the Coast recently announced a partnership with Giant Skull to create a new action/adventure game based on the beloved Dungeons & Dragons franchise. This exciting news comes shortly after the formation of Giant Skull, a studio founded by Stig Asmussen, the former director of God of War and Star Wars Jedi, in 2024. Asmussen, alongside his former God of War 3 collaborator John Hight, who became the new president of Wizards of the Coast, immediately set out to build a new gaming experience.
When the prototype they developed aligned perfectly with the D&D universe, the collaboration was born.
While details on the specific mechanics of the game remain under wraps, Asmussen has revealed some intriguing insights. He shared that the motion model for character movement in this game will be significantly improved compared to the Star Wars Jedi series. In an interview with Polygon, Asmussen explained, “We’re experts at melee combat, and John got to see that firsthand. That expertise translates beautifully to D&D. With the Jedi games, we made some early mistakes in terms of momentum, and those mistakes carried over. But with Giant Skull, we started with a clean slate and had the freedom to learn from those past errors. The result? A motion model that’s faster, smoother, and more fluid than ever before-no jank, just buttery smooth motion.”
This improvement in character motion promises to make for an exhilarating gameplay experience, particularly given the emphasis on ‘exhilarating traversal’ in the announcement. While the project only began in 2024, fans of D&D can expect a polished experience, though it may take several years before the game is released.
In the meantime, Dungeons & Dragons fans have other exciting titles to look forward to, including Demeo x DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: Battlemarked (set for release later this year), a cooperative game developed by Starbreeze scheduled for 2026, and a mysterious new project by Invoke (the studio behind Dark Alliance). With so many exciting projects in the works, the future of D&D in the gaming world looks very bright indeed.
