Elon Musk has just announced a groundbreaking milestone for Tesla, revealing the tentative dates for the launch of the company’s first robotaxi rides and the rollout of autonomous Tesla vehicles to customers’ homes. According to Musk, the first Tesla robotaxi rides will begin on June 22, 2025, though he cautioned that the date could change as safety remains a top priority. The first Tesla car, equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, will autonomously drive from the factory floor to the customer’s residence on June 28, 2025, which also happens to be exactly 69 days after the 4/20 celebration.

Musk, known for his quirky sense of humor, also highlighted that the launch of Tesla’s unsupervised FSD on HW4 vehicles is just around the corner.

He emphasized that the HW4 cameras are so advanced they can count individual photons, ensuring that Tesla’s FSD is less prone to visual interference, such as from direct sunlight. However, Tesla is taking extra precautions during the early rollout. Recently, a Tesla robotaxi was spotted in Austin with a follow-up vehicle behind it, indicating that there may be a safety-driven backup vehicle initially. Leaked reports also suggest that remote operators will be available to intervene in case the FSD encounters problems.

At launch, the robotaxi service will be limited to certain geofenced areas in Austin, Texas, which will likely help ensure smooth operations. While the system’s safety measures are reassuring, Tesla’s robotaxi service won’t yet compete with Waymo, which currently operates a fleet of over 1,500 vehicles nationwide. Additionally, Waymo is shifting to more affordable Toyota cars from the expensive Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in order to reduce costs. Despite the cautious approach, Tesla’s progress in the autonomous vehicle sector continues to attract significant attention, and the June 2025 launch marks an important step forward in the future of robotaxis.

The fact that it’s going to Austin first makes sense, that’s like Tesla central right now 😂

I hope this actually works and isn’t another one of those ‘tech promises’ 🤔
