Superman’s latest adventure, directed by James Gunn, brings a twist that’s sure to keep fans buzzing. IGN has the exclusive first look at an action-packed scene that unveils a major development in the story: Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) is revealed as the mastermind behind the Hammer of Boravia.
In the clip, we see Luthor controlling the massive armored villain as it battles Superman over Metropolis.
The Hammer of Boravia is an entirely new character created by Gunn, first teased in a mock Daily Planet article written by none other than Clark Kent himself. According to Clark’s report, the Hammer arrived in Metropolis seeking “retribution for the recent political interventions in Boravia by Superman.” This new character is deeply tied to recent events where Boravia, led by President Vasil Glarkos, invaded neighboring Jarhanpur. However, Superman swiftly stepped in to end the conflict. Although the Boravian president insists that the Hammer acts independently, it’s clear that there’s more to this vigilante than meets the eye.
As many expected, the reveal that Lex Luthor is behind the Hammer’s actions isn’t exactly a shocker. It’s fitting that the villainous Luthor would be involved in a plot designed to tarnish Superman’s reputation. IGN’s Jesse Schedeen pointed out that the Hammer’s arrival emphasizes a central theme of the new film: the global challenges Superman faces as he strives to protect the innocent while inadvertently creating international tensions. This exploration of Superman’s influence outside of the U.S. echoes themes seen in Zack Snyder’s *Batman v Superman*, which similarly addressed the unintended consequences of Superman’s actions.
While some may argue that this revelation is a spoiler, it’s worth noting that it’s hardly a twist that’s hard to see coming. Luthor’s deep involvement in any scheme against Superman is practically a given. As for the rest of the movie, IGN’s Tom Jorgensen gives the film high praise, calling it “a wonderfully entertaining, heartfelt cinematic reset for the Man of Steel,” and a fresh start for the DC universe on the big screen.
Superman hits theaters and IMAX nationwide on July 11.
