Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Classic Mode – A Ground-Up Rebuild Brings New Features

Fans of the classic strategy game Final Fantasy Tactics will be thrilled to hear that the highly anticipated Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Classic mode has been rebuilt from the ground up. Originally released in 1997 for the PlayStation, the original source code has been lost, but this has given the development team a unique opportunity to not only recreate the game faithfully but also add content that was previously cut.

In an official post on the PlayStation Blog, director Kazutoyo Maehiro shared that the decision to build the Classic mode from scratch came about because the original game’s master data and source code were lost. This loss was a result of the limited resources and tools available to developers at the time. As Maehiro explained, back then, developers often had to overwrite old code when fixing bugs or adding new language options, leading to the eventual loss of the game’s original files.

The team could have chosen to emulate the original game, but this would have limited their ability to make necessary improvements and updates. By rebuilding the game from scratch, they not only ensured a faithful recreation of the original but also laid the groundwork for the addition of cut content, such as character dialogues during battles. These dialogues will provide more backstory for the characters after they join Ramza’s party, a feature that many fans feel was sorely missing in the original.

While Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will include new features, it won’t be the definitive edition some fans might have hoped for. Notably, it will not include the extra content seen in the War of the Lions PSP version, which was later adapted for mobile. The decision to omit this content was made to keep the remaster as close to the original as possible, ensuring that it stays true to the game’s roots.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will launch on September 30th for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
