Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Remaster Features Significantly Larger Script

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is about to bring us a much more expansive story experience than its original PlayStation counterpart. Director Yasumi Matsuno confirmed today that the Japanese script for the remaster will be a whopping 60% larger than the one in the original game, at least in terms of characters.

This increase, however, doesn’t include system-related texts, chants, brave stories, sound novels, or cutscenes.

Matsuno clarified that while it’s tough to give an exact comparison of total text volume between the original and remastered versions, the expanded script clearly signals a deeper, richer narrative. So, even though the game may not feature large new content beyond some additional character interactions, this will significantly flesh out the story.

One of the most significant challenges for the development team was working without the original game’s source code, which had been lost over time. This is a common issue for older games. As a result, the team had to painstakingly recreate the game’s programming from scratch by examining various versions and, in some cases, relying on instinct as they played through the game. Despite these challenges, director Kazutoyo Maehiro confirmed that, in an effort to stay true to the original experience, the additional content from the War of the Lions PSP release won’t be included in this version. The goal here is to faithfully recreate the classic experience.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will be available for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 starting September 30th.

Tbh, not having the source code sounds like a massive pain. Respect to them for making it work! 👏
