The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is sending out over $126 million in refunds to Fortnite players who made unwanted purchases. This comes as a part of the FTC’s ongoing investigation into Epic Games’ practices that led to these purchases.
The refund process, which reopens today, allows players, parents, or guardians to submit claims for compensation until July 9, 2025.
This new round of refunds follows the 629,344 refunds issued in December 2024, which totaled over $71 million. These refunds were part of the FTC’s action against Epic Games, who was found to have engaged in “deceptive” practices. In total, with this current batch of 969,173 refunds, the FTC has now refunded over $200 million to players impacted by Epic’s microtransaction policies.
While the FTC did not disclose the average refund for this batch, it did reveal that PayPal and check recipients will need to redeem their refunds within 30 and 90 days, respectively. The claims process, which started in September 2023, is part of a larger $245 million fine imposed on Epic Games for its handling of microtransactions in Fortnite. Players who missed the first round of claims in early 2024 now have an additional two weeks to file for their share of the funds.
