Galaxy S25 Edge Ditches Advanced Batteries for AI Optimization – Smart or Shortcut?
The Galaxy S25 Edge may be one of Samsung’s slimmest and sleekest smartphones to date, but it comes with a trade-off – a modest 3,900mAh battery and no telephoto lens. This design decision has left many fans scratching their heads, especially with competitors embracing cutting-edge battery tech. In a recent interview with Tom’s Hardware, Blake Gaiser, Samsung’s Director of Smartphone Product Management, explained the company’s reasoning behind skipping silicon-carbon batteries: it’s all about agentic AI.
According to Gaiser, Samsung’s approach leverages the power of AI to boost efficiency and performance without relying on newer, less mature battery technologies. “With that new chipset and agentic AI enhancing battery efficiency, we believed sticking with traditional lithium-ion was the best fit for the S25 Edge,” he said.
This decision may sound strategic, but not everyone is convinced. The industry is watching Chinese brands rapidly deploy silicon-carbon tech and push battery capacity and longevity far beyond what Samsung currently offers. While AI can help optimize usage patterns and background processes, many users feel it’s being used as a corporate crutch – a buzzword to justify hardware stagnation.
Samsung insists it’s not ignoring the future. The company is actively researching silicon-carbon batteries and even solid-state alternatives. Rumors hint that the Galaxy S26 Ultra could pack a massive 7,000mAh cell if these new technologies mature in time. For now, solid-state advancements are expected to debut in Samsung’s smaller devices like smartwatches and rings by late 2025.
While AI efficiency might carry the S25 Edge for now, many consumers expect more from a premium flagship – and they’re vocal about it. With rival manufacturers pushing boundaries, the pressure is on Samsung to turn its bold words into bold hardware upgrades.
If you’re still tempted, Samsung is currently offering up to $170 off the Galaxy S25 Edge on Amazon, including a $50 gift card. The offer applies to all color options and includes a one-year limited warranty.
