The Galaxy Z Fold 7’s Selfie Camera Placement and Other Design Flaws

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has just been unveiled, and while it’s an impressive piece of technology, there’s a design flaw that’s hard to ignore. As a fan of smartphones, I’ve already started nitpicking, though some of you might agree with my observations. The Z Fold 7 is undeniably sleek and thin, making it the most refined foldable Samsung has created so far. At just 8.9 mm when folded and 4.2 mm when unfolded, it’s comparable to the Oppo Find N5, which is quite the feat. The Honor Magic V5 is technically thinner at 8.8 mm, but the difference is so minor it’s almost negligible in everyday use. However, despite its thin profile, there are a few drawbacks-primarily in battery life and charging speeds-which I’ve already discussed in my earlier review.

Now, let’s get into another gripe about the Z Fold 7, one that I can’t unsee.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7’s Selfie Camera Placement and Other Design Flaws
It’s about the placement of the selfie camera on the inner display. Situated in the middle of the right side of the screen, it creates an annoying visual imbalance. Ideally, I would have preferred this hole-punch camera to be in the upper right corner of the screen. Why? Because with its current position, it disrupts the symmetry of an otherwise gorgeous display. Sure, it’s only a small detail, but it’s enough to throw off my visual equilibrium. And although this isn’t something that will ruin your experience, I can’t help but wish that the camera was positioned more thoughtfully to improve the overall look of the device.

Interestingly, this design flaw reminded me of the iPhone 16 series, where the placement of the Camera Control Button also missed the mark. As my colleague Preslav pointed out, the button is awkwardly placed within the frame, making it difficult to access, especially for larger iPhone models like the iPhone 16 Plus or iPhone 16 Pro Max. It’s a minor but frustrating issue that makes it harder to grip the phone comfortably. Hopefully, Apple will address this in the iPhone 17, or perhaps the iPhone 18?

Samsung seriously needs to rethink the selfie cam position. It ruins the vibe of the display
